What's so wrong with being a member of the Borg collective, anyway?

Seriously?they basically come to your home world decimate the defenses .

Assimilate all who are differentBasically kill everything that makes youYou have no free will.Your told to kill those who resist who choose to be indibidualsDestroy everything that made your species unique good or badThey assimilate children so your childhood being the best part of life? No such luck.

You get put in a pod and excellerated your growth to maturity, so me a male maybe to 40 years(lol),.They force to take up arms against all species that are different. Make you travel to distant parts the galaxy to assimulate species you don't even know.

so they are so bad. It's worse as they don't even understand why you wouldn't want to be a borg. They are it as a way to strive for perfection.

The biggest problem what is perfection? To me it's not being a drone with no freewill. Granted it could be stated that we already exist that way.

Each day you go to work that you hate work to make a good company better and the brass more money when and the guys 9n the bottom rung get peanuts to pay bills. The kicker is you can quit that job or job search for an alternative. Take a holiday have fun with family and friends on your day off.

Granted if you've been in a place so long and leave and come back you loose your term of service. So your redundancy is considerably less. You loose your bonuses you've earned.

But as a drone you don't get any of that. All you do is work, assimulate and regenerate in an alcove. No going out or socialising.

Let alone holiday or retirement.

Should state government employees have collective bargaining rights?

Absolutely, if you believe anyone at all should have collective bargaining rights.

(If you oppose all unions on ideological grounds, I respect that point of view but this answer isn't directed at you.) I agree with Kathy E Gill on that point. Labor unions and collective bargaining exist for only one reason: To serve as a countervailing force against the natural tendencies of large, monopolist companies (or, more commonly, oligopolies) to maximize profits by squeezing workers as hard as possible.

(This isn't because they're mean or bad people; they just respond to incentives like everyone else.) Of course the devil is in the details with collective bargaining, and there are all kinds of problems and inefficiencies in outcomes, corruption, arm-twisting, etc. Technically it's "monopsony" we're talking about here using market power in buying something (labor in this case) rather than selling something, but nobody except economists ever uses the word "monopsony.

"In any event, for a wide range of occupations (e.g., police officer, air traffic controller), the government is the only employer.

Of course that's not true for every kind of job, but many positions involve skills that would be virtually worthless outside government. The government is one of the few true monopsonists in the labor market, and the most powerful, as the largest employer in the United States (and probably most countries). Theoretically, that gives it more bargaining leverage to crush labor than any corporation in existence.

It logically follows that government employees should have the same right to bargain collectively. As Kathy stated, the tactics used may be quite different and more narrowly constrained for public safety and similar reasons, but that's a separate question

Where do you believe is the future of stamp collecting?

The main problem is see is not with established collectors who may or may not collect new issues.

The problem is with recruiting new collectors into the hobby. Many collectors, like myself, started collecting as children. We started with collecting the stamps off the incoming mail, then started picking up bags of stamps on paper (kiloware), moved up to packets of stamps off paper, and eventually started buying individual stamps and sets from dealers.

The problem is that e-mail has made it much more difficult to get into the hobby, but the problem started well before that. Almost all business mail became permit mail without stamps in the 1960s and 1970s, which really decreased the volume of stamps most people received on their mail. However, personal mail and some small business mail still had stamps, and companies still received large amounts of stamped mail (mostly bill payments) which would often find its way into kiloware packets.

E-mail just further decreased the use of postage stamps. Volumes for first class personal mail have rapidly decreased over the last 20 years. Plus most bill payments are done on-line, so relatively few stamps are being used.

And the post office doesnt even want to put stamps on your parcelsthey want to use printed labels instead in many countries (Canada, US, UK, and Australia at least). I only have one bill every three months that needs to be paid by mail. I mostly use stamps on E-bay packages to other collectors and to a friend overseas.

Im not sure how the next generation will ever get interested in stamp collecting when they so rarely see a stamp, unless they already have a collector in the family

What garbage collection algorithm is the latest Java virtual machine using?

Java 7 (the current version of the JVM / JDK / libraries as of October 2012) includes a new supported algorithm for Garbage Collection (GC) called "Garbage First" (aka G1 Garbage Collector, from Sun's Hotspot JVM). This is a similar concept to the "real time" garbage collector from jRockit (Appeal Virtual Machines, acquired by BEA, acquired by Oracle).

The challenge in Garbage Collection is to keep up with the rate of allocation. You can get lots of fun stories and technical details by searching up presentations done by some of the engineers at Azul Systems, e.g.

Gil Tene and Cliff Click. What the G1 collector does is to (rightly) assume that under most scenarios, most allocations are garbage almost instantly, and to focus its collection technology on these very short-lived objects. It does this by cutting the overall memory available up into blocks, using those blocks to hold objects (allocations) -- probably in a heap data structure, continuously performing the "mark" phase of the mark&sweep algorithm, and then collecting within the blocks that statistically will yield the highest gain (i.

e. the most memory freed). See: http://www.

oracle. com/technetwork/java/javase/tech/g1-intro-jsp-135488.htmlThere is another concept, called "escape analysis", which uses analysis of the code to determine which allocations may escape a method, may escape the stack, and may escape the thread.

Basically, that means that the native code compiler can choose to allocate objects "on the stack" (basically free from a clock cycle perspective) instead of from a memory manager. This is available in the Hotspot JVM, and from what I can tell, it's now on by default. See: http://weblogs.

Can a group of animals or individual life forms show a level of collective "consciousness" just as unconscious cells in an animal become conscious?

Even a pack of wolves that coordinates a hunt and shares the meat is acting as a corporate entity. But it is not a conscious entity. You can argue that ant colonies, beehives, large buildings, and even human cities are meta-organisms because they are often functionally greater than, and distinct from the sum of their parts.

But consciousness is a nervous system phenomena. Airports are not self aware. For consciousness you need artificial intelligence.

Many people have talked about the internet as being a conscious entity, or at least the potential for it to become conscious in the future, and it kind of makes sense, because the internet is an information system. The brain is also an information system. While there are major differences between electrical circuits and neural circuits, what makes this question difficult to answer is that consciousness is hard to define, let alone measure and detect.

You may be interested in the slime mold- a single celled species of algae that feeds on fungi. The cells are individual organisms but they exhibit multi cellular behavior. When a cell detects food, it secretes a food signalling hormone.

Other cells detect the hormone and begin to travel in the direction of the food, or may continue searching for their own food, depending on the intensity of signalling hormone. The intensity varies depending on the abundance of the food source, which allows other cells to determine whether it is economically efficient to move towards the food source. The slime mold behaves in a seemingly intelligent way to find and distribute food across all of its cells.

That is an example of an entity that seems conscious, but actually is not. First understand that there is a difference between cooperation/inter-dependence, and consciousness
