Explosion 1

In July 1806, British forces in Malta were preparing artillery shells for shipment to Sicily, as ammunition stocks there were depleted due to the siege of Gaeta by the French. On 18 July, a working party of 13 men commanded by garrison gunner Bombardier Anderson were preparing a consignment of shells from the Birgu magazine, which was filled at full capacity with 370 barrels containing 40,000 lb (18,000 kg) of gunpowder, as well as 1,600 shells and grenades. Anderson was using a metal chisel to remove the fuses from live shells, which was contrary to instructions, and this resulted in sparks which caused a massive explosion at 06:15. Anderson and the working party were killed immediately, as were three British soldiers of the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot and 23 Maltese soldiers of the 2nd Provincial Battalion. Between 150 and 200 civilians from Birgu were also killed, and approximately 100 others were injured by falling debris. The explosion frightened the inhabitants of Birgu, and it was also heard in the nearby cities of Senglea and Cospicua, as well as in the surrounding villages. The magazine was located within the city's fortifications, and a section of the walls "went up in the air" and left a large breach. The city gate at the Porta Marina, a small bastion, and part of a curtain wall were all destroyed and were never rebuilt. Parts of the Navy Store Houses were also damaged or destroyed during the explosion. Birgu's cityscape was also altered by the explosion, since a large number of houses were destroyed or damaged by the explosion itself and by the rocks which fell from the bastions. Four hundred ninety-three people reported property losses due to the explosion.

1970 Propane vapor cloud explosion in Port Hudson

The 1970 Propane vapor cloud explosion in Port Hudson in Missouri resulted from a propane pipeline break, which led to the formation of a large, dense vapor cloud. Upon ignition, the vapor cloud exploded with tremendous force. Both near- and far-field damage indicate that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating trinitrotoluene (TNT). The violence of the explosion is likely unprecedented. As such, the accident is widely quoted as one of the first, if not the first, confirmed accidental occurrences of an unconfined vapor cloud deflagration that turns into a detonation - a so-called deflagration to detonation transition. The accident represents a "worst-possible" sort of case history for assessment of the hazards of fuel transportation. The accident took place in Port Hudson, Franklin County, Missouri, on December 9, 1970. The pipeline was owned by Phillips Pipeline Company.

Coulomb explosion

Coulombic explosions are a mechanism for transforming energy in intense electromagnetic fields into atomic motion and are thus useful for controlled destruction of relatively robust molecules. The explosions are a prominent technique in laser-based machining, and appear naturally in certain high-energy reactions

2011 explosion

On 12 September 2011, there was an explosion in an oven used to melt metallic waste of a "weak and very weak" level of radioactivity, killing one person, and injuring four. The explosion happened in the Centraco centre, used by Socodei, a sister company of lectricit de France. A safety cordon was set up around the plant by fire officers because of the risk of leakage. .

Anyone else find the concept of the big bang laughable?

Do not forget about those giant dinosaurs I do not think they could have survived an explosion like that never mind maybe that is what wiped them out

How you can prevent the next gas explosion

Recently several gas explosion related accidents have occurred in houses in Dhaka under the Titas Transmission and Distribution Company franchise area. Apart from the negligence of Titas' authorities, it is apparent that the ignorance of the household inhabitants was also responsible for these accidents. In order to prevent gas explosions, it is important to be informed about the nature of these explosions and how to avoid them. Natural gas is odourless and is generally not dangerous in an open atmosphere, as it will only burn there. However, if natural gas is allowed to accumulate in a closed house or room in the ratio of gas to air at 6:1, it forms the explosive mixture, which can explode out of a small spark from an electric switch or even a matchstick. If gas leakage occurs in an open space, it posits no danger. It will only burn at the leakage point. If windows of a kitchen are open, or if there is proper exhaust in the room, it will ensure that the gas escapes and the formation of an explosive mixture is avoided. Thus, it's important to make sure that the doors and windows of the kitchen are not tightly closed, and so the windows should be left slightly open, thereby ensuring that gas is allowed to diffuse into the air in case of gas leakage. Another preventive measure could be to not immediately switch on the lights or fans of your house once you come back home after a long day. The main door should be left open for a few minutes before turning on the light or fan. In case of a gas leakage, this would ensure that the explosive mixture is diluted, thereby preventing a gas explosion. While gas is odourless, gas leakage can be detected at an early stage from its smell, provided the gas companies use odourants. However, unfortunately gas companies nowadays tend not to use odourants in gas, either due to sheer neglect of their duties or other reasons. It would appear that workers of the said companies need to exert a little more effort to lift the drum of odourants to a higher platform, thereby making them unwilling to do this task with sincerity. Moreover, the supervisory staff and engineers also seem to have a negligent attitude as they do not ensure the use of odourants in the gas supply system. This human error leading from negligence results in the loss of lives and properties from gas accidents, as people are not aware of a gas leakage until it's too late. If gas leakage is detected, it's important to close the valves of the gas burners as well the valve near the gas regulator, which will be outside your apartment but within your building complex. If the doors and windows of your house are not open, make sure to open them immediately, so that the gas formed has a way to escape. Most importantly, do not panic. It's not like danger exists only with LPGs; risks are similar with natural gas as well. In a closed atmosphere, the explosive mixture of natural gas will be formed at almost the same percentage. As with LPGs, it's easier to ensure to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures in the case of natural gas. However, there is a heightened risk with LPGs. LPG is bottled under high pressure and may explode if proper thickness of the steel of the container is not ensured. While purchasing a container of liquefied gas, please check if it has been manufactured by an authorised company, who are issued certificates ensuring the quality of steel while also assuring users that it will be able to withstand the high pressure of LPG.
