I'm a European Citizen. How Does It Feel to Live in a Country That Has the Same Level of Freedom As

I am also a European, and have lived in nine countries, two of which were as free as Europe. They were Canada and New Zealand. These two felt very much like Europe, although one thing that was blissfully absent were the constant reminders of past wars. I liked being able to simply exist in my own era, not having to take into account distortions to society incurred by people I never knew.

The world wars have left a permanent shadow on Europe, and it was a relief to leave that behind. But when you are European, your standards for many things will be high. I felt I did not get what I needed from life outside Europe in that regard. The homes are not as nice, the cities lack depth and history, and the reference points of the people can be uninspiring. So, after half a lifetime spent living in these and some European countries, as well as the US, China, and India, I have made my home in a country that can give me European sophistication, entirely without the shadow of war: Sweden

Who was the most intelligent founding father and why?

Jefferson is the easy answer, but Hamilton is better. His accomplishments lie further beneath the surface and he tended not to flaunt them as much as Jefferson did. A lot of Jeffersons accomplishments were fairly facile; he as a great tinkerer, but his mind jumped around a lot.

His writing was important the Declaration a major accomplishment. But more important than Hamiltons work on the Federalist Papers? Comparing apple and oranges, but still. Jefferson had little to do with the Constitution, Hamilton a lot.

Jefferson came from money and ended up with none. Hamilton was a totally self-made man, and what he was able to accomplish in his early life is astounding.Im frankly not as fond of Jefferson as many are because I think he was a gigantic hypocrite and not just on slavery. That, of course, is not relevant to how smart he was. That said, I agree that he had an amazing mind. But Hamilton was astonishingly smart. The musical makes that clear, but I have been a big fan of Hamilton well before that.

Maybe we can not have a feud and declare both Jefferson and Hamilton equally smart

What does free trade mean?

Free trade essentially means that you levy trade sanctions against some countries, while subsidizing others. You want to subsidize the weapon makers in your country? Rename the subsidize foreign aid, and give them to a foreign leader, on the condition that he buys from the weapon maker you wanted to subsidize.Call it free trade too, since you are sending guns to a different country.

And then you prevent some countries from buying medicine, or selling oil, and seize their financial assets. It means you can have the backing of the OECD to enforce tax practices that enable tax havens, and keep the developing/producing countries poor. Yes, offshoring money to tax havens is a lot of what is meant by free trade.

Its a system where even if the people in the country that owns the company, and the final market, decide to vote against some unethical practices, those practices end up being done on the other side of an imaginary line called a border. It means wealthy individuals and corporations can buy up all the infrastructure in poorer countries, like the land, and the natural resources, and then exploit and export them, without the local population seeing any benefits

What if Stalin had been shot in June 1941? What if someone like Zhukov had organized a palace coup and killed Stalin or held him hostage?

This entire discussion turns on one assumption - that Stalin, and Stalin alone held the keys to the castle, and that others would, upon his death, make changes. This is simply not true. Stalin surrounded himself with men who agreed with him, and he would be replaced by men who agreed with him. And while Stalin was the supreme leader he was also a product of a totalitarian regime - life required subservience to the state and to Stalin, so there were no opposing views, let alone masses of people looking to hear about them. Upon his death, especially his untimely death in wartime, the incoming leader or leaders and the people themselves would look to do things in his honor, for his glory and in his name rather than spur any meaningful changes in leadership, strategy or tactics. Things would certainly change over time, getting further and further away from Stalin's course with every passing day simply because others would be making decisions. But a meaningful break from Stalinism would take years of preparation, and at the time there simply wasn't an alternative voice for people to listen to. Though Khruschev later denounced Stalin he only did so in secret, and only after Uncle Joe had been dead for four years

Do dynastic politics in India ruin the country?

According to me that person has to be Sharad Pawar. The most senior politician in our country and still playing the great moves in politics. He is the person who can bring the politics where ever he wants hence its dangerous for our country I guess. He can bring in politics into sports.

What made Ulysses S. Grant such an effective general? Why did he succeed where so many others failed?

Many people have touched upon this, but Id like to state clearly that Grant knew, as Sherman did, but no previous Union generals had, that in modern war, battles were irrelevant. Once upon a time winning a battle was critical, in the aftermath a beaten army would be scattered and without supplies and unable to fight for a long time until it could reform and resupply. But in modern war, with railroads and telegraphs, this could be done very quickly. So battles didnt matter, it was campaigns that mattered. Before Grant, every Union commander fought a battle and stopped. Even if the battle was a victory, they stopped.

Grant knew that whatever the outcome of a particular encounter at a particular spot, you kept up the campaign (his skill at logistics, which many have mentioned, was key to this). Hit strong resistance ? Flank (Grant maybe could have learned this lesson a little sooner; Sherman knew it better (though, again, he failed to follow it once - once) and didnt spend his mens lives freely). Keep the campaign going, if the enemy wins 10 battles but is getting pushed back, then they are losing.

Should CJI Dipak Mishra be impeached?

Shri Dipak Misra was a non descript lawyer before the Congress made him a judge in the High Court. Later on the same Congress made him the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Then his stature is further enhanced when the Congress makes him CJ of Delhi High Court. And finally he is made a judge in the Supreme Court. Once again by the Congress. He might as have become the Chief Justice of India under the BJP, but then that was because he was the senior most judge. It was the groundwork done by the Congress that made him become the obvious choice for the position.

And what does the Congress get in return. Nothing. Unlike MMS this guy is no rubber stamp. He is such an ungrateful fellow that he is totally independent. His judgements never takes into account, how it affects the Congress. And worse. He takes his discretionary powers literally. Emissaries from 10, Janpath are not being accorded the status of Demi gods as they were at the PMO or MMS' residence.Such a man can't be tolerated. So let's impeach himu2026

What coincidence led you to your current partner?

My former girlfriend had broken up with me during my senior year of highschool. I moved and got a job out of town. I came back on weekends to watch my brothers football games that fall. I got the romantic idea to get back with her by sending Roses with a note attached saying that I would like to meet her at a pizza place after the game and try to get back together.

So after the game I am at the pizza place and wait and wait - she is a no show. I figure well I gave it shot, it didnu2019t work out. A table over there is group of girls. I struck up a conversation with one of them and we hit it off. Started dating and eventually we ended up getting married. The girl and the roses? I found out a few years later that she got a dozen roses delivered to her home - with no note, no card, nothing. She had no clue who had sent them. The note had fallen off the roses in the delivery van - the florist could not recall what ever happened to it.

So I always wondered how my life would have turned out differently if that note had not gotten lostu2026

Is Sam Harris a fraud?

Is Sam Harris a fraud? He doesnt appear to be a fraud. He has published articles since he received his PhD. Here is a link to one: Neural correlates of maintaining ones political beliefs in the face of counterevidence. That doesnt mean his PhD thesis is all that much, but I dont have the training to judge and I assume most people who know him as a speaker and writer dont have the ability to judge either. He isnt a professional scientist, that is one who works in the field every day and his list of papers, at least a list a non-academic can find is short. That is common with people whose careers leave the academic life. I just looked at Neil deGrasse Tysons cv and his last professional paper listed was in 2008.Most people who know about him arent paying attention to his science. When I first heard of him he didnt have a PhD, so that wasnt an issue. He is a wealthy man who pursued an education. He has a PhD, so what, but he isnt a fraud since he isnt peddling pop neuroscience. He is peddling pop atheism. I guess its a good living
